Image Navigation Ltd. is on the verge of introducing their Image Guided Implantology, IGI 2.0 system, an FDA-approved surgical GPS for dental implantology, into the market. IGI 2.0 offers real-time, high accuracy surgical navigation, enabling surgeons to perform precise, predictable, and repeatable procedures. Teeth are an important part of a person’s aesthetics. IGI gives the dentist an unprecedented level of control and accuracy on placing the implant optimally for function and also aesthetics. Image Navigation Ltd. is currently raising a new round of funding of $14 to 16 million led by a US investor which will enable it to enter the US and European markets in the coming year.
IGI expands the use of 3D CT scan images from diagnostics and planning to real-time surgical applications. IGI’s real-time uninterrupted visualization software enables surgeons to have an accurate view of the intra-bony position of the burr and to be in precise control of the direction, position, and depth of their drill. IGI has zero onscreen delay. Image Navigation Ltd. will usher in a new era of navigated and robotic dentistry.
The initial IGI 1.0 system provided a workflow platform for dentists. Using the 3D CT images of the patient, dentists can plan the dental surgical procedure and see a detailed map of the patient’s mouth. The current IGI 2.0 system provides real-time accurate tracking of the surgical drill using patented “SnapLock”. The “Snaplock” allows aligning the CT scan to the patient’s anatomy precisely. The dentist can quickly customize the “Snaplock” attachment to the patient’s jaw. Once in place, the “Snaplock” provides tracking in real-time with a sub-millimeter accuracy of the drill relative to the tooth. The IGI 2.0 also automatically stops drilling in proximity from major nerves, which is their “auto-stop feature”. The IGI 2.0 is a generation ahead of the competition, in terms of accuracy and in terms of a time lag between the position of the drill in the patient’s mouth and where it appears on the screen.

Over 10 million dental implants are placed annually in the USA and Europe, restoring teeth function and patient smiles and generating $20B in annual revenue. Yet, guidance systems and robotics have made limited inroads into this field. The IGI 2.0 will overcome workflow and clinical challenges, enabling precise, predictable, and repeatable implant placement.

Today, the rapid spread of in-office CBCT(Dental Cone Beam Computerized Tomography, the CT scanner of choice for dentists) scanners is driving the demand for dental navigation for dental implant placement with currently over 25,000 3D scanners in dentists’ offices, and an expected 57,000 CBCT scanners to be installed by 2022. The price of a CBCT scanner has dropped from $250 K in 2012 to $58 K in 2021.
